How to correctly connect a lamp holder

Lamp holders are one of the fundamental pieces when creating any lamp, as they are responsible for connecting the bulb to the electricity source. But, did you know that there are several types of lamp holders? At LIGHTING DIY, we help you choose the most suitable one for your project and connect it safely and easily.

What is a lamp holder?

The lamp holder is an accessory shaped like a cup that houses a thread inside, where the bulb (LED, incandescent, etc.) is screwed in. At the other end, the lamp holder has an opening that allows making the necessary electrical connections for its operation. Without it, we would have to connect the cables directly to the bulb, which would greatly complicate the process.

How to connect a lamp holder?

Connecting a lamp holder is simpler than it seems, but it is always important to follow some basic steps to ensure that everything is properly installed and functioning correctly. Here's how to do it:

1-Turn off the power: Before starting any connection, make sure the electricity is completely turned off. It is very important to work safely.

2-Disassembly of the lamp holder: Disassemble all parts of the lamp holder (the upper cap, the lower cylinder, and the terminal block or piece with screws that connects to the power source) to clearly identify them.

3-Preparing the cables: Use a clamp to securely fasten the cable to the lamp holder. Strip the ends of the cables, leaving 5 to 7 mm of exposed copper.

4-Connecting the cables: Insert the cables into the corresponding holes of the terminal block and make sure they are securely fastened using the screws.

5-Assembly of the parts: Attach the connection terminal block to the cap of the lamp holder, making sure it fits well. Then, screw the lower cylinder until it is securely fixed.

6-Variations in lamp holders: You may come across some types of lamp holders that do not require screws in the terminal block (automatic ones), or that have external washers to secure metal or textile shades or bells. In these cases, the connection process is the same, only the washers do not affect the wiring.

If you are assembling a floor lamp or a table lamp, you will not need to use clamps, as the lamp holder will be directly attached to the lamp tube. If you want to see the process step by step, feel free to check out our visual tutorials.
