Braided cable and insulators: exposed wiring, the old way

When porcelain switches and sockets are surface-mounted, the cable shows on the wall. Fabric braided cable and porcelain insulators make it look good and hold it firmly, as in the houses of old. Here you choose just once the cable for the whole installation, the metres and the insulators. If you like, also a junction box, ceiling roses and matching porcelain lamps.

The braided cable runs along the wall on porcelain insulators, one per metre.

What it includes and what each part is for

  • Braided cable Textile-covered cable, sold by the metre and available in many colours. For lighting, 0.75 mm².
  • Larger cross-section 3 wires with earth, for appliances: 3 × 1.5 or 3 × 2.5 mm².
  • Porcelain insulators Keep the cable off the wall. One per metre.
  • Junction box Porcelain, where several cables meet.
  • Porcelain ceiling rose To hang a lamp from the ceiling.
  • Porcelain lamp Vintage style, E27 screw.

You do not have to work anything out: the configurator counts these parts for what you choose.

How it goes together

  1. Say what type of installation you have: with appliances, the cable has 3 wires with earth.
  2. Choose the cable and the metres for the whole installation.
  3. We suggest one insulator per metre; change the quantity if you need to.
  4. If you like, add a junction box, ceiling roses or porcelain lamps.
  5. With the power off, fix the insulators to the wall, run the cable and connect it to each switch or socket.

Always make the connections with the power off. If you have no experience with electrical installations, ask an electrician to do them.

Frequently asked questions

Which cable do I need?

For lighting, 0.75 mm² braided cable. With appliances, 3-wire cable with earth of 1.5 mm² or more; we suggest 3 × 2.5 mm².

How many insulators do I need?

One per metre of cable. We suggest a quantity based on the cable length; you can change it.

When do I need a junction box?

When several cables meet at the same place. It is optional.

How many metres can I order?

Up to 50 m. For more, an expert checks your installation.
